Storagezilla said that the SNIA people are technologists, not marketers. Wayne Adams who is from EMC and is the current Chairman of SNIA has a background in marketing according to his bio at SNIA:

Prior to EMC, Wayne was responsible for product marketing and business development of various strategic software and hardware products at Digital Equipment Corporation.

I'm guessing he's a technologist first but it's not like he doesn't understand the concept of marketing. I agree completely with Greg Schulz on this and think they could have done something with the attention being generated by Microsoft.

I still believe it's not SNIA's place to wag the finger at anyone. That's not their charter and yes it would have gotten them some ink if they did but I don't think the majority of it would be positive and would have been seen for what it would be.

Totally opportunistic.

I've worked with Wayne, he's a smart guy and if he thinks something is a bad idea it more than likely is.

Having been involved with SNIA for many years, rest assured there are technologists, engineers and marketers involved. The TWGs tend to be more engineering centric/focused where the forums/initiatives can be a mix of different people and skill sets. It should not matter if SNIA is made up primarily of engineers or marketers as both are needed, however so to needed are end users and vars as part of the model and ecosystem.

As with Zilla, I also know Wayne and concur that he is a sharp capable person. I also respect and appreciate him stepping out and taking the time to engage via non SNIA mediums/venues to discuss, clarify, generate awareness and build stewardship amongst the industry perhaps gaining new members/supporters in the process.

Also to clarify, my point was and still is that SNIA should not be wagging their finger at anyone, rather, leverage industry and other opportunity timings to help get its word/messaging out. I still believe that SNIA can and should do more to get their message out of what they are doing. That means to both that know about SNIA and more importantly to those who do not. Last week SNIA should not have wagged their finger at anyone, however, there was the opportunity to gather press/media/bloggers and others to talk about SNIA and what they are doing leveraging the moment, again, without wagging the finger or saying anything specific about an incident, technology or vendor.

If SNIA is not getting the PR results that they want or hoped for via their briefings, perhaps as is the case with other organizations, an outreach and coverage analysis should be done. That is, understanding who to brief that will or can help convey their message or work it into coverage along with tracking who is talking about SNIA and who is not. Knowing that there are some PR folks who subscribe to Storage Monkeys, perhaps they can chime in with thoughts and ideas on how SNIA can maximize its coverage.

The old world model of build it and they will come may still apply, however, in a fast changing web 2.0 social media interactive and unidirectional environment, there also needs to be out-reach and involvement in other forums/venues. For others to come to the SNIA venues/groups/activities they need to know about them, and that involves SNIA stepping out and getting involved in other industry related venues such as Storage Monkeys.

I hope that Wayne will continue to interact via mediums such as Storage Monkeys as part of a broader SNIA outreach and awareness approach to both share with the viewers what he and his team are doing, as well as gain participation unidirectional support from others.
