Avamar 5.0

Avamar 5.0 will be out mid November, anyone have the inside scoop on new features? I do know that there will be 3TB nodes, but that's about all I've got.

Sorry it looks like I won't be able to discuss these details any further. Once the product reaches GA I will post additional details.

I believe they are technically 3.3 TB nodes. Which doesn't really make sense considering they only license by single TBs. The new hardware will be the Dell R710 platform. Not sure the details, but an R710 runs the Nehalem processor and packs a lot of RAM.

One feature of 5.0 that will be a great improvement will be the vSphere integration. Not sure how this new feature works but I am trying to get an early release preview of the integration. If this preview is non-NDA I will post the details.

My hope is that the integration is very similar to Vmware Data Recovery where all you need is a plugin and a device to backup your virtual machines (either Avamar DataStore or AVE). The current method in 4.1 requires scripts using vcbMounter which in my opinion is not the way to go.

VMware is encouraging backup vendors to start using the vStorage API, which 5.0 will support. When the service console finally goes away and ESXi is all there is, the vStorage API will be a must-have for all backup solutions in a VMware environment.
